The Grimoire of the 72 Angels of the Shemhamphorash by Qirui Huo.
This book contains the complete transcript of the three magic manuscripts as regards the 72 Angels. It includes The Divine Cabal, The Book of the Cabala ie Lemoth or of Names, and The Schem-ham-maphoras. These manuscripts were originally written by Lazare Lenain and copied & translated by Frederick Hockley between 1840-1841. Besides the transcription, massive comparative annotation on relevant manuscripts are appended as well.
Qirui Huo is an author from China, and an occultist and teacher, mainly studying in the field of Ceremonial Magic, Grimoire Tradition, especially Solomonic Magic, Angelic Magic, etc. In recent years, he spread Western occultism in China through lectures, articles, and books. he has also cooperated with other Occult authors transnationally by means of providing important manuscript materials or co-publishing magic books with them.
A brief description about the book by Qirui Huo:
The book is named The Grimoire of the 72 Angels of the Shemhamphorash. This book was preliminary edited in 2020.
The original materials used in the book are mainly based on the 3 magic manuscripts copied by Frederick Hockley between 1840-1841. They are The Divine Cabal, The Book of the Cabala ie Lemoth or of Names, and The Schem-ham-maphoras. The themes and contents of these manuscripts involve 72 Angels and Lazare Lenain’s La Science Cabalistique.
Regarding the first book, The Divine Cabal, this book mainly describes the relationship between the 72 Angels and the God name יהוה Tetragrammaton, the explanations that they correspond to or preside over various things in the world, and the information about 12 more Superior Angels ruling the 72 Angels and 12 Signs of the Zodiac. And more importantly, the Characters or Seals of each of these 72 Angels, and Prayers are given in the text. The whole book describes the practical instructions for working with these 72 Angels.
The second and third books, The Book of the Cabala ie Lemoth or of Names, and The Schem-ham-maphoras, are actually the English translation of La Science Cabalistique published in 1823 by the French author Lazare Lenain, a contemporary of Hockley. It is 3 centuries earlier than The Science of the Kabbalah (2020), which was recently published by Piers A. Vaughan. Meanwhile, Hockley’s copies is quite different from the original French of Lenain, in terms of 72 Attributes and Influences of God and of the 72 Angels. For this reason, I also showed these different French paragraphs in the footnotes and translated them into English so that the readers may see the differences between them.
Like the first book, these two manuscripts also record the Characters or Seals of the 72 Angels that are not included in Lenain’s book. These Seals are also very different from those of the 72 Angels from Arsenal MS 2495 given by Robert Ambelain in his book La Kabbale Pratique (1951).
In fact, by comparing all the manuscripts that I have found that record Seals of the 72 Angels, it can be seen that the Angels’ Seals recorded in Arsenal MS 2495 are very corrupt and incomplete.
In the process of writing this book, I referenced up to 5 manuscripts (They have all obtained publishing licenses from the Libraries), made their complete transcriptions and detailed notes, as well as many important tables to ensure the authority of my edition, and to provide the readers with comprehensive knowledge.
On the whole, the subjects of all the 3 books I have shown in this book are related to 72 Angels. The first book is a detailed practical explanation of invoking these angels, and the second and third books are theoretical guidance, mainly on the 72 Angels, their different Attributes and Offices. And these contents form a complete and detailed Grimoire of 72 Angels.
This book is like Lemegeton’s first book, Goetia. It is a living, practical, and important Angelic Grimoire. Like the enduring popularity of other works related to 72 Demons and 72 Angels, and the precious legacies left by Frederick Hockley, a famous occultist and manuscript scribe, I believe that through the sale of my book, it would bring brand new magical knowledge and practical experience to the majority of magic enthusiasts, magicians and scholars in the future.

What an extraordinary book. Some early language errors, attributable to English not a first language. However, this in no way denigrates or detracts from the work that follows. This is the first time I have had access to the first two of the three volumes incorporated herein. The "Divine Cabal" was the most meaningful, as it included the specific prayers proscribed for the respective Angel (Genii), and a method of practice that I was previously not familiar with. What's more, the Sigils of each Genius have been modified based on Huo's scholarship. As the sigils as presented in the LKP and in common use are controversial (and perhaps even sinister), I am thoroughly looking forward to working with these as revised. The extensive tables in the Appendices summarize the knowledge within the work, making Mr. Huo's work a companion to a working. All told, Mr. Huo has taken three Grimoires and, through his scholarship, melded them into a volume that, even as a derivative form, nonetheless represents a remarkable Grimoire on its own merit. Much gratitude to Mr. Huo and Miskatonic for making this work available at a time sorely needed.
This is one of those reviews where I think less is more, the Grimoire of the 72 Angels of the Shemhamphorash contains exactly what you’re seeking within the purview of the particular associated magical system one is currently working, but along a fairly specific system… or of the few particular noted subsets. Phenomenal illustrations and artwork are abundant, but let’s be real… Aeon Sophia has always done this quite well and with some ease.
The Grimoire at hand is a well executed combination of three different texts; said texts are The Divine Cabal, The Book of the Cabala, and The Schem-ham-maphoras. Through this, author Qirui Huo has sought out to create a central piece containing all essential practicality & ensuing knowledge into a singular, albeit very in depth tome that adds much to the path being walked. This reworking of the aforementioned 3 manuscripts originally written by Lazare Lenain, and finally translated by Frederick Hockley around 1840, brings together the fundamentals of the 72 Angels of the Shemhamphorash.
Qirui has then further organized/assigned each of the 72 into their respective 12 Zodiac sub-groupings, where each corresponding angel to said sign is examined in a very concise, albeit very in depth manner. All the pertinent pieces are there, and what could have very easily been a very messy amalgamation type piece, is kept rather tight and very well done, mind you all while avoiding the usual tangents and ramblings that for some strange reason tends to happen a bit more frequently from some authors in particular (looking at you Matthew Lawrence).
This isn’t a stand alone piece per-say, but rather a very important “cornerstone” component to a practitioners continued body of work… and the path they’ve chosen. But will admit that; from a collectors point of view it is a downright gorgeously put together book. Definitely a conversation starter!
I look forward to using this book much more!
Principally when cross referencing various pieces & signs that on first glance seem completely innocuous, yet with diligence and patience those hidden pieces slowly begin to build off one another, with the praxis revealing something new through new connections within the works itself, but also future applications and approach.
This is a lovely book, well made, well printed, and illustrated with sigils and copies of antique documents throughout the book. I opened it up, and I did look through this book, but I am somewhat afraid to look at it too much because I don't want to damage the book. It goes into depth of the 72 angels of the Shem Ha Mephorash and divides them up into the 12 Zodiac signs and which angels correspond to which sign throught the book. It discusses the Cabala in depth. It discusses a history of documents by Frederick Hockley. It is an attractive book, in pristine condition that would make an excellent addition to a library. It has in depth pictures of all of the sigils related to each angel and many charts and figures. My copy is #55 of 300. I am in the process of building my library and I am thankful to own this book. I don't know if this helps any, I don't exactly feel qualified to write a review on this book, but I'm trying to do so.
