In his new book, Modern Demonolatry: Goetia Without Tears, sorcerer, attorney and practicing magician for over fifty years, W. Adam Mandelbaum, tosses the chaff and keeps the unsullied wheat of Goetic evocation, so that the modern practitioner can effectively evoke Chthonic forces without wasting words, energy and time.
He brings the same critical analysis to the Goetia, as he did to the remote viewing program of the CIA in his groundbreaking book Psychic Battlefield (St. Martins Press 2000).
For Mandelbaum, and for the modern magus, it is the results of ritual that count, not blind adherence to the old rules and the babbling of barbarous names.
For over half a millennium the accepted texts for the evocation of demons have been unduly burdened with overly complicated, heavily Christianized rituals, and a super abundance of mandatory materia magica.
The Goetia has been a prime example of the above. Its procedural recipes and unduly lengthy recitations have long been in need of a critical re-examination and revision. Its constraints are in need of restraint; its banishings in need of being banished.
Fortunately, in the last fifty years or so, thinking demonolators have sought to simplify the procedures, shorten the list of “stuff” required, and reduce the recitation of Yahweh and Jesus in the conjurations of old gods that existed long before they did. Modern Demonolatry serves as a guide to minimize these procedures and streamline the connection to the lower depths.
But even the modern writers haven’t gone far enough.
Now with the release of Modern Demonolatry: Goetia Without Tears, the dust has been blown off the ancient instructions, the current proponents for propping up the old traditions are challenged, and new techniques are revealed so that practitioners can welcome demonic communication without the need to worship, and without the need to threaten.
Most provocative of all, for the first time in any volume of demonolatry, Mandelbaum proposes a revolutionary theory of the demonic world, and submits it is actually their desire to help the magician realize his—when intelligently and respectfully called.

A relatively very short book. However that does not discount it from having a profound perspective shift within. This text resonated with me as "true" in a way I always felt about Goetic magick and unlocked a lot of ideas and self-imposed impediments.
I am not a Chaos Magician, but I do feel in my own practice that the majority of the trappings of Ceremonial Magick is laden with too much stock that potency lies in the tools and old ritual construction.
This book will give the foundation to anyone approaching the Goetia to actually start now. For those of the persuasion of focusing on practical results and not wanting a PHD in the historical lineage before starting their first attempt.
The book is not without it's cons in my opinion:
• the writing style is distinct and might not be to some's taste
• No small amount of the already short text is dedicated to frequent asides to disparage Christianity. If you're reading this book already, that in principle probably will not offend you, but it just takes up too much of the word count.
• again I mention the length. Really this is more an essay than a book in my estimation. That being said the potential profound perspective shifts may more than make up for that for some (such as myself), but I reiterate this here for those who want more book heft for their dollar.
The quality of the book is perfect. It's a smaller size so it fits easily and comfortably when reading, you can feel the quality when holding it. The Goetia isn't my area of expertise, one of the reasons I bought this book, so I can't give an expert opinion, but the practice seems sound. Some of it I disagree with, some makes sense to me, but I think it's good to have different ideas and approaches to this practice.
Similar to Antipalus Maleficiorum in writing style. The author proceeds to start listing the common works out there and give an opinion of most. I get what the author was doing here, and it works, read this if you want a listing of books to buy and what order to read them in. This book also covers the books not to read or waste your time with.
When I saw this become available as a pre-order, I jumped on it. I am very glad I did. The author holds nothing back. He's not going to waste your time with flowery words and long descriptions. He gets right to the point from the first page and says "here's what works and what doesn't." It truly is a modern grimoire that dispels all the pomp and circumstances of previous works and just dives straight into the heart of the matter.
Great book would read other books by author
Straight forward enjoyable to read love the cover and the author, i look forward to next in Demonolatry series.
