Flowers of Blood is a fascinating exploration of the folklore of plants in pre-industrial Sweden. Here, we encounter the Underworld Dwellers, the Devil, Näcken (the water sprite), Skogsrået (the forest sprite), Hyllefroa (the elder tree spirit) and biblical figures like Cain, Judas Iscariot and Maria, in evocative plant and tree folk legends. Through in-depth researches in the archives of Uppsala and Stockholm and older local historic books, Sara Bonadea George presents, for the first time in English, a body of lore that remains little known at present even in Sweden.

Verified ownerThis volume has provided quite a bit of thought. A simple premise, the myths and legend regarding plants in Sweden. Simple, yes. But what follows are intricate legends and tales and even personal stories with regard to these plants. Fascinating how some of these myths came about and how different parts of Sweden had different tales for the same plant. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it simply because it presents stories that most people are not privy to.
